Placebo As Good As Antidepressant For Treating Depression

By admin, April 9, 2008 11:01 am

A recently published study concluded “Paxil is not better than placebo in therapeutic effectiveness and acceptability in treating acute major depression”.  You would be hard pressed to come to this conclusion after reading the drug company’s ads for the product.

Natural alternatives that have been well proven are physical exercise and fish oil.

Can Omega-3 rich flax seed oil have the same benefit as a vegetarian alternative to fish oil?

  3. Scott R. Swanson DC CCEP says:

Flax Seed can have the same benefit but because of chemistry there are some unknowns. Flax Seed contains Alpha-Linoleic Acid which breaks down into EPA and DHA which is what you want for treating depression particularly EPA. How much of the ALA is converted to either EPA or DHA or any at all is variable from person to person and may be as low as 10% for EPA.
