Placebo As Good As Antidepressant For Treating Depression

By admin, April 9, 2008 11:01 am

A recently published study concluded “Paxil is not better than placebo in therapeutic effectiveness and acceptability in treating acute major depression”.  You would be hard pressed to come to this conclusion after reading the drug company’s ads for the product.

Natural alternatives that have been well proven are physical exercise and fish oil.

The Overmedicated Child

By admin, March 13, 2008 6:25 pm

The average person with kids today is not aware that drugs given to children have never been tested specifically for them.  Physicians are prescribing drugs based on a “best guess” as to the correct dosage efficacy and even safely.  Looking at the FDA’s recent warning regarding children being given cough and cold medicines demonstrates that children are not just “small adults”.

This year, the Government Accountability Office said that only one-third of the drugs prescribed for children have been studied and labeled for pediatric use.  The pediatric research that has been done includes some frightening results: of older drugs recently being studied on children, 87 percent were being improperly prescribed.  Children were getting medicine that didn’t work at all, was under- or overdosed, or that had some possibility deadly side effects.
What can you do?  Ask your pediatrician these simple questions before accepting a prescription:
1.  Would a wait and watch approach be advisable in this instance?
2.  Is this the only treatment available or do I have options that don’t include drug therapy?
3.  What are the side effects of this drug?
4.  Has the drug been tested for pediatric use?
5.  Is this the use for which the drug was intended or are you prescribing this off label?
6.  Can we begin with a smaller dosage and then increase if necessary?
Many parents report and improvement in their childs quality of life after beginning routine, family chiropractic wellness care.  A healthy nervous system results in a stronger immune system, which could mean less prescriptions drugs.

New Surgical Techniques Increase Re-operation Rates

By admin, October 3, 2007 3:28 pm

Medscape Today is reporting on a study from the September 1st issue of
Spine which stated that greater use of spine fusion surgery and new
surgical techniques have actually resulted in an increase in lumbar
spine re-operation rates.

Apparently the authors of the study expected
the opposite would have been the case. Rates from 1990 – 1993 were
compared with rates from 1997 – 2000 with about 25,000 patients in
each cohort. Between the two time periods the prevalence of fusion
increased from 9.4% to 19.1% while the 4-year cumulative incidence of
re-operation rose from 12.4% to 14%. Fusion patients treated between
1997 and 2000 were 40% more likely to undergo re-operation within the
first year than those patients treated between 1990 and 1993.

Brook I. Martin, lead author from the University of Washington in Seattle,
stated that surgeons “should be alarmed by the rising rates of
re-operation” and should be more careful to select patients whom
surgery will most likely benefit. Furthermore, doctors should inform
their patients that “surgery involves substantial risk for subsequent
operations.”
