This is one of my favorite times of the year in San Francisco with so many great happenings. Bay to Breaker’s 99th anniversary is on Sunday, May 16, 2010 the longest consecutively run footrace in the world. I will be working on a number of people next week who will be running the race, 7.46 miles is no joke especially Hayes Street Hill. I will be running again this year, join me for a short functional warm up before the race!
More Bay to Breakers information here. If you have any injuries from the race be sure to call your San Francisco Chiropractor. Good Luck!
Thursday May 13th is bike to work day. I’ve been biking to work for quite a while (see photo’s of today’s ride at the top) and there are many benefits, increased energy, weight loss and fabulous views of the city! If you don’t already bike to work it would be a great opportunity to try it out check out the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s energizer stations with snacks, coffee and bike tune up’s.
The number of people I have seen who have lost their jobs in the last 2 years has been truly heartbreaking. If you have or even if you have not lost your job the video below really captures what I believe in my heart, everything happens for a reason. Hang tough through the short commercials at the beginning it’s worth it.
A patient sent me a link to Dr. Andrew Weil’s page on chiropractic, it provides a nice description of our education and conditions we treat as well as some good general information.
“Chiropractic spinal manipulation has now had about three decades of very active research, and hundreds of studies have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals examining its clinical usefulness. Spinal manipulation has been found to be effective in the treatment of low back pain (particularly chronic pain), neck pain, muscle tension headaches, and several other conditions.”
The NYTimes recently published a column on the resistance to use of the best evidence in health care. They report that one of the biggest problems in getting good health care is the resistance of health care providers to changing the voodoo that they do to treatment that actually works.
This article references the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research’s guidelines on treating lower back pain. Spine surgeons were so upset that it excluded their favorite treatment – surgery – that they tried to kill the agency and they did quite a good job. The Times article reports the reason that surgery was not recommended: research didn’t show it was effective but it did show that spinal manipulation was effective (Chiropractic).
Personally I have to practice evidence based care to be able to sleep at night, it only makes sense and it’s best for patients.
Consumer Reports released the results of a large survey with regards to what helps people with their back pain. Not surprisingly The highest rated treatment was chiropractic care. Here’s a video from CBS’ Early Show discussing the article.
The Chicago Tribune recently published an article on chiropractic with some great recommendations for choosing a chiropractor.
-Be wary of those who say spinal manipulation can cure whatever ails you
-Ask whether exercise is part of the program.
-Ask friends and relatives for recommendations.
-Get more than an adjustment
-Shop around
Great recommendations for finding a chiropractor in San Francisco or anywhere else.
This week in honor of the San Francisco Marathon on Sunday July 26th we are highlighting treatments for conditions that commonly afflict long distance runners.
