If this doesn’t get you going this week I don’t know what will…. Thank you Dr. Ross!
This is one of my favorite times of the year in San Francisco with so many great happenings. Bay to Breaker’s 99th anniversary is on Sunday, May 16, 2010 the longest consecutively run footrace in the world. I will be working on a number of people next week who will be running the race, 7.46 miles is no joke especially Hayes Street Hill. I will be running again this year, join me for a short functional warm up before the race!
More Bay to Breakers information here. If you have any injuries from the race be sure to call your San Francisco Chiropractor. Good Luck!
Thursday May 13th is bike to work day. I’ve been biking to work for quite a while (see photo’s of today’s ride at the top) and there are many benefits, increased energy, weight loss and fabulous views of the city! If you don’t already bike to work it would be a great opportunity to try it out check out the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s energizer stations with snacks, coffee and bike tune up’s.
We’ve been using Kinesiotape in the office now for many years. The video below give a nice synopsis, want to try Kinesiotape? Give your San Francisco Chiropractor a call!
Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal today on Kinesiotaping. I use it in the office on a regular basis and patients report benefits. I agree with the article that there isn’t enough research yet, hopefully more will come soon. This brings to light what most people take for granted; that most medical treatments are proven to be effective. But is that really true? And while Kinesiotape might not be an effective healing agent in the long term I guarantee it will not hurt you. Consider the following from the New York Times:
Most of the above treatments can have serious side effects and complications. No doubt the smart thing to do is consider conservative care first. Call your San Francisco Chiropractor first!
I came upon a great article this week that I would like to share from an obscure source, it even includes references! You can download it here (warning PDF download). The main points are summarized below:
1. Their education is equal to their medical colleagues … and might be better in some areas. Several studies have shown our knowledge of musculoskeletal disorders are superior to that of many medical couterparts.
2. They do more than crunch backs and necks. We are licensed and take tests in physical therapy modalities and we are as the article say’s licensed as “primary care providers” although I would choose to use the phrase “portal of entry”. You do not need a referral to see us like you would for physical therapy.
3. It’s safe. Despite the press and rumors manipulation by a chiropractor has been proven safe in several large studies.
4. Chiropractors took the AMA to court … and won … twice. For a long time the AMA disseminated false information about chiropractic and chiropractors to their members and the public for the purpose of protecting their market share.
5. M.D.’s and D.C.’s are working together. I went to dinner with and orthopedic surgeon last night Paul Sloser MD, he is completely accepting of chiropractic, has published extensively in many journals and does not hesitate to refer for manipulation.

This week a very interesting study came out of Australia which found chiropractic care can prevent injury. Check it out on the BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders website.
“The chiropractic group missed just four matches during the season through hamstring or lower limb muscle strains. The group not receiving chiropractic treatment missed 14 matches through hamstring injury and 21 matches through lower limb muscle strain.”
“The group receiving chiropractic treatment also had significant reductions in non-contact knee injuries, low back pain, and improvements in physical components of health, although this was not the goal of treatment”.
Interested in increased performance and fewer injuries? Call your San Francisco chiropractor, Berkeley chiropractor or Santa Rosa chiropractor.
WebMD for once has a decent article on back pain. They cite risks you can not control:
And risk factors you can change:
Be wary of the factors you cannot change and the ones you can. If you still develop back pain call your San Francisco Chiropractor or Berkeley Chiropractor.
The number of people I have seen who have lost their jobs in the last 2 years has been truly heartbreaking. If you have or even if you have not lost your job the video below really captures what I believe in my heart, everything happens for a reason. Hang tough through the short commercials at the beginning it’s worth it.
At least once a month a patient currently under treatment asks about spinal decompression after they have seen a full page ad in the paper touting amazing results. Does spinal decompression work?
Yes, it works for some people. The problem is that it is essentially just expensive traction (treatment plans range from $2-9000), which has not yet been shown to be very effective, certainly not 86% as most of the ad’s claim. A literature review published in the Journal of Chiropractic and Osteopathy concluded:
“There is very limited evidence in the scientific literature to support the effectiveness of non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. This intervention has never been compared to exercise, spinal manipulation, standard medical care or other less expensive conservative treatment options which have an ample body of research demonstrating efficacy. Considering the cost-benefit relationship, many better researched and less expensive treatment options are available to the clinician.”
