Cancer Pain Management with Chiropractic

Chiropractic Treatment for Mesothelioma Pain Management

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen and is caused mainly by exposure to a naturally occurring mineral known as asbestos. Asbestos was utilized in a number of military and industrial applications throughout most of the 20th century. Those diagnosed with mesothelioma are typically given less than a year to live as the cancer is often diagnosed in later stages when treatment options are less effective. Mesothelioma patients often deal with a significant amount of pain from disease symptoms and treatment side effects.

Mesothelioma patients may choose to visit a chiropractor as part of their treatment regimen to help control pain and alleviate headaches, tension and stress. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic doctors “have a deep respect for the human body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health. A doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.”

Two studies published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics examined the cases of two patients combating cancer. A 57-year-old man diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer experienced significant pain relief and was able to reduce the amount of medication needed following chiropractic care. He also reported an increase in his quality of life during his journey with the cancer following a visit to a chiropractor.

A 54-year-old man diagnosed with lung cancer (a cancer often related to asbestos exposure) began seeing a chiropractor after experiencing little pain relief one year after he underwent surgery to combat his cancer. The man experienced pain relief immediately after beginning chiropractic care and discontinued use of all pain medications after two visits to his chiropractor. The Journal noted, “These clinical examples offer two specific instances of how chiropractic may improve the quality of a cancer patient’s life.”

Disease Mongering to Boost Sales

By admin, September 28, 2009 11:03 pm

Great article about the business of pharmaceuticals.

To a growing chorus of physicians and health-care specialists, the very idea of treating the risk of a risk is wrong. They have labeled the phenomenon “disease-mongering,” defined as the corporate-sponsored creation or exaggeration of maladies for the purpose of selling more drugs. Prehypertension “is a classic case of a risk factor being turned into the disease,” says Dr. Steven Woloshin of the Veterans Affairs Outcomes Group in White River Junction, Vt. “If you make a cut-off for blood pressure that’s close to the normal range, then just about everyone can be diagnosed.” An AstraZeneca spokesman responds that the trial was considered important enough to be published in the prestigious NEJM. “I think that speaks for itself.”

Is Your Ab Workout Hurting Your Back?

I’m a big fan of Stuart McGill and use a lot of his exercises for rehabilitation of the spine. Check him out in the New York Times.

“There’s so much mythology out there about the core,” maintains Stuart McGill, a highly regarded professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo in Canada.”

Most Conditions Resolve with Conservative Measures

By admin, September 24, 2009 6:42 pm

The Wall Street Journal just printed a great article on how much overtreatment happens in the US.  Most interesting to me was the paragraphs on back pain, but what also caught my was that American’s spend $1 billion on unnecessary antibiotics.

“For all the misery it causes, 80% to 90% of back pain resolves with only “conservative measures” (which include anti-inflammatory drugs, rest, heat, physical therapy and chiropractic treatments). “Sometimes it take days to weeks, sometimes it takes weeks to months, but pain lasts more than three months in only about 10% of cases,” says Michael J. Yaszemski, chief of orthopedic spine surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.”

“Whether to operate even in those remaining cases is controversial, he says. With acute lumbar disc herniation, studies have found that two and five years later, there’s little difference between patients who had surgery and those who did not. But surgery can sometimes provide relief faster.”  I would add that surgery also comes with some possible severe side effects including death and blindness.
